Maddy and York

Maddy and York

What a great photo!! Poodle expressions are so fabulous (I may be bias). York joined his new family five years ago, he is a Parris & Ruben baby and litter mate to Francis Claire. He looks a lot like dad Ruben! So fun to see them in their forever homes! We have met so many wonderful people finding homes for our babies! Many I consider friends :)
We are ready for new babies! I can’t believe how much free time I have with no puppies to care for. The photo’s alone take a couple hours (but worth it). Getting back to some stuff I put off for lack of time. Harlee and I decorated for Halloween last weekend (I love Halloween) and I have refocused on finishing the kitchen. Ordered appliances yesterday and getting quotes for counter top. Will be nice to have the house done for Christmas.

Aspen & Skittles

Aspen & Skittles

My beautiful boys, making their wonderful family smile!! As you remember Gary had a close call when mouths and collars of these two got tangled. Gary found breakaway collars and promised to let us know how they worked out. Here is what he said Barb -
About 5 months ago – as you will recall – Skittles and Aspen were in their normal romping and wrestling in the living room when one of their collars became lodged/tangled in the other’s mouth. I referenced the email in italics below as a refresher.
Since then (and I wanted to wait a few months for normal use before drawing any conclusions), we bought both of them “break-away” collars by XXXXX http://www.keepsafecollar.com/View.aspx?page=dogs/products/collars/keepsafe/description See this link for a visual – I also attached a picture of Aspen and Skittles from the summer that shows how the collars look and the 2 lease rings I reference
Here is a candid review for those who might be interested:
Pros:
- Does not break-away that easily – you can still hold the dog by the collar (with hand) with reasonable resistance without it breaking away, or alternatively – you can hold the dog with the 2 leash “rings”, which will assure it will not break-away (see picture in link). To leash up the dog – the leash clip needs to snap thru both “rings” (see picture in link)

- Works well for what it is designed to do. There has been 2 times since May 2010 that I found one of the collars in the yard after the 2 poodles were done rough playing. So not saying that there would have been any drama like that night in May – but it does mean that whatever they were doing caused enough force to further break away as the safety function kicked in

- Easy to put back on if there is a “break-away”

- Collar looks fine and holds up well in weather, etc.

- Lease rings are easy to work with (see picture in link)
Cons:
- If not holding the lease rings together and you have to quickly grab the collar if dog is pulling – collar will break-away – and you will have to control the dog otherwise as collar will be off. I have had this happen every so often if the two poodles are around people off-lead – and they get curious, go after a squirrel, etc. – collar may break-away given they are strong guys – but I can grab them by body skin and control from there (get on a sit/stay – then put collar back on) – so more of an inconvenience for me thus far

- Pricier than traditional nylon collars ($17 (large size) vs. $6-$8)

- Limited colors versus traditional collars (I think about 6-8 choices)
Bottom line:
These collars have worked well and as advertised for us since the incident referenced below – and the slight inconvenience of them breaking-away every so often unexpected is easily handled with the peace of mind we get knowing that Aspen and Skittles can horse play all they want when we are not around – and not have to worry about getting tangled in each other’s collars. Other freak accidents like getting collars caught on tress/shrubs/benches, etc – are also preventable as talked about on the website referenced Not sure how this collar will hold-up over years, not months – but so far so good!

Just thought I’d share the results of the product, since the group seemed interested last we visited the incident/subject back in May 2010.
Will send some new pictures and stories of the crew soon – they are always up to (into) something!
Hope all is well
5/17/2010 – email

Barb –
I’ll start by saying all is OK- but a quick note on a scary thing that happened…
On Friday night – we were finishing dinner – and pups (only Aspen and Skittles) were engaged as usual in play and wrestling, etc.
I heard them both “screeching” like I have not heard before. First I thought they were having their 1st real “fight” – but then quickly found them tangled up together.
What happened was that Skittles managed to get Aspens collar lodged in his lower mouth/jaw – so that it locked around his lower jaw – and of course with little room – started to strangle hold Aspen – freaking both dogs out as they were locked up head to head. We were lucky that my parents were over – and I and Melissa quickly restrained them both so not to move or jump – and my dad was able to run and get scissors
I carefully was able to cut Aspens collar, broke the tension, and they were both freed up – very scared – but seemingly no injuries, thank goodness.
We since did some research over the weekend – and found that a common cause of puppy, even adult dog death could be from “play” – when getting themselves tangled/collars when left alone – via feet/mouths getting caught in collars – or collars getting caught on things (benches, etc) as well.
We at minimum when leaving them alone will be taking collars off – so to never have this risk again
We also found a “break-away” collar – which I am going to try for both of them – which has a patented “break” to it with enough tension
Probably a freak accident – and we have had dogs for decades – and never seen this – however – if this happened when we were out and they were alone – I’m not so sure of the outcome…
Scary – REAL – and to keep in mind
Thanks to Gary, appreciate the time he took to put this together!

Relaxing with dad

Tonya, sent me an update on her beautiful boys!! She has two Francis Claire/Beau babies Cupid/Beaudreaux from their first litter (Valentine litter 2/13/08) and Harvest/Harvey from last years Thanksgiving litter 11/25/09.
Hey Barb, how are you? see pic below from my phone. Sorry I’m so bad about sending pics on the boys! Here is a quick shot from yesterday. Mr. Harvey was 86lbs at the Vet the other day (Booty was 73 Ibs) and is the most amazing goof ball really sweet :) Booty has grown into quite the gentleman and just can’t express how much we love them.

Will send some better shots of just the boys for your site.

Take care,

Tonya Adams They just have to touch you :)
The poo’s really enjoyed last nights pontoon ride. Ruben had to stay home as someone is going into heat and since he hasn’t determined who, he performs TRIAL humps on everybody causing chaos and snarling in objection to his advances. Poor guy, just eager to start his work. At any rate his persistence gets annoying and since the pontoon isn’t that big it is drama we humans choose to avoid!

This may be the last ride of the season :(

Andy and his new family

Andy and his new family

Andy and Jim arrived safe, it was a long day but everything went well. He’s very happy with his new family. Here’s what mom Bonnie said Some pics of Beaus first day here. He has already learned to sit for treats. Slept all night last nite in the kennel what a sweetie. He was helping us get things put back in some of these pics and checking out the toys. We love him and Smiley is warming up to him so all is going well.

Rocket/Bode 6 months old

Rocket/Bode 6 months old

You know I love to share PUPDATES and adorable Bode is getting so big! What great markings he has!! here’s what his mom said about him Hi Barb,

Just a short update on Bode. I’ve included a picture that was taken on the same beach and same log as the picture of him at 8 weeks. As you can see he is no longer sitting on my lap. LOL He is probably somewhere between 40 and 50 lbs. The last weigh in for his heartworm pill was 40.6 lbs. He is doing very well and is my shadow. We are doing obedience training (which we are off to today) and he is very quick to pick up everything. We are done camping for the year and are looking forward to taking him x-country skiing this winter. He will be getting a backpack for Christmas so he can carry his own supplies. LOL He is fitting in well (just don’t ask my cat that) and is getting along much better with my little Italian Greyhound. We are preparing for “the” operation next month or the month after. My vet would like him to be 6 or better 7 months old. We are very happy with Bode and he is all we hoped for. Take care.

Pat & Bode I’m having puppy with drawl :( no sweet little faces full of kisses for me today (the adults are glad, all my attention is back on them). I’m keeping busy cleaning and bleaching getting ready for the next babies. I’m so happy my babies have such WONDERFUL families! They will be so VERY loved!!

Andy and Bonnie going to airport

Andy and Bonnie going to airport

I don’t know if I’m tired or depressed but I don’t feel like doing ANYTHING today.
Bo Peep going to the airport

Bo Peep going to the airport

We got up at 3am and headed to the Grand Rapids airport. They were all so good in the car, Bo Peep slept on my lap, Andy and Bonnie next to me. I checked the girls in at 5:30am then took Andy/Beau to Jim’s hotel. Andy/Beau hadn’t pooped (which is a big worry when he’d be traveling all day with little/no opportunity) and I wanted to give him lots of time to get that done. Changing their whole schedule makes it hard so I ran him around the yard several times but he was way more interested in leaves and wood chips than he was with what I wanted him to do. Bonnie and Bo Peep’s (keeping their names) mom called as soon as she had the girls. She said they opened the crate and at first they wouldn’t come out but they could see their little tails wagging. They were very relaxed and she said she was so glad they could travel together. They are thrilled with their new babies and promise to send pictures. So I have 3 weeks to get ready for our next babies :)

Lily Loo Pearl

Lily Loo Pearl

I remember 2005 like it was yesterday. My Lily left me. I thought I would never stop crying. Tears seeped out of my eyes without warning, and endless supply of tears. My chest burned, I hurt all over. I couldn’t believe how incredibly sad I was. I had dreaded this day, Lily had breast cancer and after two surgeries it had continued to spread. The other dogs were as sad as I was, they would put their head on my lap and look up at me with those sad sweet eyes and I’d cry some more. I was so thankful I had them to help me through the pain. She was their pack leader and they were lost without her. I feel so bad for people who do not know the love of dogs, they miss out on an unconditional love that people can not provide. I was lucky enough to have my Lily 3737 days. Because of her I smiled every one of those days. As bad as it hurt when she left me, I wouldn’t have missed a single one of those smiles. I think of her and smile still, and cry.

Molly/Zara

Pretty girl Zara, I just love the silvers! And she sure has mom’s eyes (Patti Sue)! I love getting pictures of the babies grown up. About half her litter was silver. Looks like the last litter is going to have a lot of blue, which is much harder to tell until they are grown. Color pretty much does what ever it wants. Not much new here. Getting the babies ready for their flights Saturday. Andy is going to California with his dad and the girls are off to Virginia. I’ll be puppyless for a few weeks until Parris has her babies. No heat yet for Nicole, darn I’m looking forward to more of those parti cuties!!

Elliot and his kids!

Elliot and his kids!

About a month ago I got a call from Sheila. My mother in law (Eleanor) had been in their assisted living facility five years ago. During her stay there Sheila got an apricot standard poodle puppy Hunny, an adorable, busy girl that I loved to see every week when we visited. Sadly Sheila was calling because Hunny had been hit by a car (in front of the kids) the driver had not slowed down to avoid her nor stopped after he hit her (I hope there is a SPECIAL place in HELL for an a**hole like this!!!!) their hearts were broken naturally, and the two year old kept asking “where Hunny”? Sheila had just had a new baby and was going back to work so a young puppy was really out of the question. Elliot was with Terry at the time, so I really hadn’t thought to mention him to her, since we just don’t rehome adults our conversation ended. I really hadn’t thought about our talk until last Wednesday when my eyes FLEW open at 3:48am and a voice (probably mine) said TELL SHEILA ABOUT ELLIOT. I did and they were thrilled to have him!! Perfect for me, he’s an hour away! Perfect for him, he is SHOWERED with affection from the kids missing their Hunny so very much! Perfect for dad Sam he has somebody to walk with! Perfect for everybody. Sheila sent me these photo’s and when I saw the faces of the kids (I teared up to be honest)I knew Elliot was where he should be. She promises to send pictures OFTEN!! The house was pretty quiet this weekend without my buddy, but he has important work to do, mending broken hearts, a job he’ll do with his eyes closed :)

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL BABY!! Samantha Sue 5 months old! Here’s what her mom said about her Hi Barb,
Here is Samantha the beauty after her latest grooming. Our dog walker met her for the first time and absolutely fell in love with her. He complimented her beautiful coat (and that was before she was groomed!) Samantha is doing well. Her hernia has gotten smaller on its own, and the rest will be taken care of when she is spayed. She is going through the puppy version of the terrible twos! She is very full of herself and loves jumping on visitors and taking US for a walk! We continue puppy classes, where she is a star pupil! I can’t believe how grown up she looks in this picture. Where did my puppy go?!!! Talk to you soon!!!

Palmer 10 months old

Palmer 10 months old

ADORABLE!! Our Palmer happy with his family!! Here’s an update from him!! HI Barb:

Attached are a couple of pictures with my boy Danny. Last week me and my mini brother and sister, Danny and Mom and Dad went to Traverse City on vacation. We stayed in a house with a nice fenced yard and a coy pond (I loved watching the fish). As you can see, I LOVED swimming in the bay as long as my feet could touch bottom. We went for long walks; me and Dad (nice bonding) and Mom and the minis. We went to the Dunes and Mackinaw. One of the pictures is of me and Danny on the Ferry.

SO many people commented on how beautiful I am and what kind of “Doodle” I was. We told them I am ALL poodle. My mom gave your website out to several people since they were so impressed with me. Mom and I are in a Rally class for Obedience. I like it better than the regular obedience because I got kind of bored in there. (I am VERY smart, you know).
That’s all for now, my boy Danny moves to college tomorrow. I will miss him very much. I love my family though and they love me!

Welcome home Woody/Jack!!

Welcome home Woody/Jack!!

THAT FACE! If only he could talk :)
well he can, he sent us this!! To Barb, my friends at PapmperedPoodles and family,

Hi, all. I just thought I’d tell you about my first day at my new home and family. Well, it was busy! First thanks, Barb for spiffin’me up and getting all the admin stuff out of the way. I would have helped, but you know, without an opposable thumb . . .

The trip up to my new home near Empire was great; Mom held me the whole way and I got a few zzz’s in. They talked to me the all the time. And when we got there, wow – two signs out front. One says “It’s a Boy” and the other “Welcome Home JACK”.

My new parents, ahem, pack leaders, seem very nice and they appear to be quite bright for people. They taught me (or they thought they did) where to do my business. Really I decided the area and they thought they did. It all worked out fine and I hit the mark all but once. Had to withdraw one credit from my puppy bank. No bigee. I got more back. For example, I now know my new name, Jack. They want to call me that. I like it. I bet you do too, Dad. I’ll make you proud, don’t worry.

They have a real nice place in the middle of the woods. I mean really big tress. They were talking and I heard them say they’ll take me for a walk in the woods when I get a little older and bigger. Can’t wait. They were also talking about a “big puddle” they call lake Michigan. I’ll tell you all about it soon.

I said they were pretty bright for humans. In just the first day, I showed them how I would come to them (if they asked nicely); how much noise could come from my little frame especially when I missed you guys last night; what a play bow looks like and what’s the right size bowl, so I don’t have to tip it over to get my food out.

Let’s see. Lots of toys to chew on. Lots of new smells and, oh yeah, I did make a mistake of trying to chew on a shoe when it was on my mom’s foot. Won’t do that again. I’ll wait until it’s in her closet. More later.

Love you all,
Jack (previously .k.a. Woody) Marshall

Happy Birthday Luau/Lucy!

Our pretty girl is one! It’s Nicole and Jack’s baby girl and she keeps them BUSY! She’s full of energy and LOVES her walks. I’m still waiting for Nicole to go into heat for her last babies, she never has been very regular. The babies start going home today, Woody and Buzz. Tomorrow Jessie and Barbie. I am so happy they get to start their new lives but it’s a sad day, and it came SO fast! The food drama continues I got them 4 health (4 star) at Tractor supply only and TASTE OF THE WILD Venison/Bison and once again the stool was soft. I blamed the Venison gave them 4 health and salmon flavor and the little logs returned. They must be so tired of these experiments. The trouble is some pups do good on some foods (Bo Peep and Buzz did fine on Blue Buffalo) I’m looking for one everybody thrives on! Hasn’t slowed them down they are full of the dickens!

Car ride to the vet

Car ride to the vet

Well I can’t believe the time has come to part with my babies. You’d think I’d get used to this but I never do. Each baby is very unique and very special, very missed. They did great in the car (I’m always thankful for that) and great at the vet. We had a long discussion about food and I decided food was not my vets area of expertise. She had confirmed what I thought about the diarrhea costing them weight gain (passes through so fast they get no value from it) but was not concerned about the STAR rating from the dog food analysts, she feels that if they do good on it, continue to feed it. I couldn’t disagree more, kids do good on ice cream but it isn’t necessarily the best nutrition for them. The Taste of the wild-salmon has solved our soft poop problem but I really am not comfortable with the “all stages of life” rather than puppy food. AGH just so MANY choices!! I got THE cutest photo’s yesterday!! these babies are a HOOT!

Kudos/Nicholas 10 months old

Nicholas is having such a good time!! Here’s an update from his mom
Hi Barb! Here are a few pictures of Nicholas from the Labor Day weekend on Sapelo Beach in Georgia. He LOVES running on the beach! He’s popular – everyone wants to meet him. He had a great time playing chase with some teenage boys and playing catch, and was very well behaved – as much as he wanted a hot dog off the table he listened well and resisted! He’s really doing a great job interacting with people and dogs both in crowds and in smaller settings. He makes sure you know someone is at the door but after a sniff or two, calms down quickly. He has a very strong chase instinct – he is just sure that someday, he’s going to catch a squirrel. He has such a great and funny personality and is a talker. He lets us know when he’s ready for his walk, and when his canine brother Parker has a bone that he thinks is his. He’s 65 pounds now and really filling out and gaining muscle. He is such a joy and we are so happy to have him in our lives! Thank you!

Working at the dog training booth

LaRue sent us some pictures of Roman and Zara at the fair, here’s what she said about their day! Hi Barb,

Roman & Zara had to work at the Fair Today for the Sheboygan Dog Training Club. I tried taking pics but soo many people in the way you couldn’t see Roman or Zara but I did get a few. We had so many compliments on them. MEN were stopping to ask what kind of dogs they were. They didn’t realize Poodles look like that!! SOO Funny!!!! They had kids and adults petting them all day. ODD but Roman seems to like people in wheel chairs. They were Both So Very Well Behaved with good manners.

The dog food drama continues but has improved. It is impossible to get a high quality dog food with lower protein content but I found TASTE OF THE WILD Salmon, it’s for all stages of life (not sure I like that) but already the stool is much firmer! THEY LOVE IT!! Other than the soft stool they are doing great! Such happy babies and LOVE attention!! Those faces!! I am going to miss my little cuties! They can go home next weekend! She’s hard to get good pictures of. She’s always in motion! I love her enthusiasm for life. Fiesta is doing great. She had surgery 2 weeks ago (spayed) and the vet said to keep her quiet for 10 days. Right!! It didn’t seem to slow her down one bit, and was quite a challenge to keep her from bouncing too much for at least the first few days. She weighed 67 pounds at her vet appointment. As you can see in the pictures, she is due for another haircut, her face is pretty scruffy looking. But she is just adorable and I am so happy to have her in my family. She gets along with Chloe, her poodle big sister, really well and they enjoy playing together. I always get compliments from anyone that meets her, she is stunning. The vet was really impressed with her, and of course she had all the staff fawning over her. So precious! -Laura
BOTH are so beautiful!! I have always loved Henri’s black leg!! I’m off to town to look for puppy food to mix with the Blue Buffalo (I have concluded is just too rich on it’s own). If you haven’t done it for awhile you should check the rating of the dog food you buy. Companies change food without warning CLICK HERE FOR DOG FOOD ADVISOR

Babies are doing good, cuter by the minute! So happy and playful. I’m going to need to change puppy food, Blue Buffalo (4 stars) seems to be too rich giving them very soft stool. They had much better weight gain on Pro plan (2 stars) but I do not want to feed them that! Six week shots and check up’s Tuesday then off to new homes this weekend SO SOON!!!!!

Skittles 10 months old

Skittles 10 months old

Skittles at 10 months old, such a good boy. Here’s an update from his dad about Skittles and nephew Jamboree/Aspen! Barb –

Hope you are well!

QUESTION

As you know, Skittles was neutered probably a good month or so ago… So wanted to reach out and inquire about Skittles “official papers”, although not a priority at all. If you need piece of mind that the procedure was done – let me know – and I can get vet to write letter, or “snap a picture” – guess in this case – proof is in the “picture”!!

Just let me know – but have been meaning to reach out and ask (although I don’t think we even sent Aspen’s in yet – oopps)

UPDATE

I attached a couple recent pictures of the two pups. They continue to progress. Skittles is the more laid-back and the social butterfly of the bunch, but VERY reliant on Aspen. When Aspen has to go somewhere alone, Skittles just lays down and pouts (sometimes watches out the window for Aspen to come home). Aspen on the other hand, is more tense and down to business –and really enjoys Skittles – but I think as the “leader” has no problem with Skittles out of the house for awhile – he just get excited that he has more time with me to play ball! These guys are a trip together for sure!

They both are completing obedience classes next week – and both did fine. Skittles, once again, being more laid back and less “tense”, did much better around other dogs and with obedience overall (I left him on a sit and stay at end of class by mistake, and left him in training room alone when I stepped out to talk to teacher, only to walk back in and find Skittles the only dog left in class, still on a sit and stay! – really funny and teacher was amazed!)– but they both were the “stars” of their classes – just in different ways!

The instructor used Skittles as a “example” of how a dog should have eye contact with their owner during these “exercises” (Skittles sits and stares at me most of the time in these classes) – little did the instructor know, the reason Skittles always stares me down was that he is too darn smart and knows I have training treats in my pocket! Too funny – I did not say anything and let Skittles get the “credit” he “deserved?!

They are both doing well on potty training – I still catch one or the other “occasionally” having a pee accident – and I’m convinced it has nothing to do with training and accidents – it is all because they are mad about something (like being left alone sometimes) – and decides to deliver a “message” – no poos though! Similarly, when I went out of town a month or so ago – Skittles got mad and chewed the living room window sill – which he NEVER has done. Well after the correction there and some “bitter apple” no chew spray – he has gotten over chewing window sills!

That’s all for now – will send more pictures this month – has been a busy summer!

It is Aspen’s B-Day this week!

Take good care.

Gary We love updates even though they sometime contain puppy challenges :0 (ones I have experienced myself) Jamboree/Aspen is ONE tomorrow!! Hope we get more pictures and PUPDATES from the littermates families!

I love his “help me” expression. Aunt Patti Sue makes sure everybody is spotless! rained today so I had a hard time getting good photo’s. I can’t believe the babies are almost ready to go home! They have a vet appointment Tuesday for shots, then they start going home over the weekend :( That time went SO FAST!! Below is a typical day at work.

Nicole, Patti Sue and Beau

We had so much fun yesterday! At 5pm we headed for the sandbar thinking no one would be there on a TUESDAY! Wrong! There were 3 pontoons there :( We don’t stop if anybody is there. TEN happy dogs is too much for most people (even dog lovers) and they insist on going to visit each boat, so best we find another spot. Other spots are slightly deeper so they get in a good swim, but the shallow water is a much better work out with running in the 12 inch water and a sudden drop off to deep water. They LOVE IT! After our swim, Tom threw the ball off the dock so Nicole could dive! She LOVES it and she is so beautiful to watch!! The others join in although they know she will not let them touch the ball!!
Babies doing great! SO DARN CUTE!! Getting so big and SO funny :)
